There are numerous apps, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, that offer free voice and video calling. However, this might close soon. Only when TRAI implements the suggestion will this facility cease to exist. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly been requested by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide feedback on the latter’s plan to regulate internet-based calls. The users will be quite challenged if this takes place. TRAI has earlier rejected this proposal in 2008. DoT has now reacted to the suggestion. The DoT has requested that TRAI provide its thoughts on this issue.
No more free WhatsApp calls?
The TRAI’s initial suggestion was rejected in 2008. It was mentioned that Internet service providers might be permitted to offer Internet calls via the telephone network in this regard. However, there will be a price for the hookup. Additional requirements include the installation of legal interception devices and compliance with numerous security agencies. When the topic of net neutrality was in the news in 2016–17, this issue was brought up once more. The proposal is currently being thought about by the DoT.
Let us inform you that for a very long time, telecom companies have been advocating for a single regulation to regulate all internet-based calling and messaging services. The report also recommends that the license price be paid evenly. The level of service quality should also be the same. If this occurs, customers will also be charged for calls made using other apps, such as Google Duo, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Signal, and Telegram. The taxes and charges for these services have not yet been determined, nor has the price.
